J.J. Spaun responded to his Presidents Cup omission in emphatic fashion, capturing the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on Sunday with a decisive late surge.
Starting the final round one shot behind the leaders, the American carded a five-under 67, highlighted by four birdies across his final five holes. His 17-under total left him two strokes clear of a chasing group that included world number two Rory McIlroy and former Masters champion Adam Scott.
Spaun admitted that being overlooked by U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker had provided extra motivation. Rather than contacting the captain after his triumph, Spaun said he preferred to let his performance speak for itself.
Snedeker selected Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Chris Gotterup, Jacob Bridgeman and Jackson Koivun for the U.S. team.
The Presidents Cup will take place at Medinah Country Club in Chicago.
