Pierre Gasly has been reinstated to the Monaco podium after the FIA overturned both five‑second penalties he received for speeding in the pitlane, a decision that has ignited controversy five days after the race. Alpine successfully activated its right of review, presenting new evidence that exposed a crucial timing‑loop error. The FIA confirmed that the measured pitlane distance used to calculate Gasly’s speed was 77 centimetres longer than the correct value, meaning the Frenchman had not exceeded the 60 km/h limit.
Other penalised drivers, including Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, Franco Colapinto and Oscar Piastri, cannot be compensated because their sanctions were served during the race. Russell’s case is particularly harsh, as a subsequent drive‑through dropped him from third to thirteenth. Red Bull and McLaren have already announced appeals, seeking to restore positions lost by Isack Hadjar and Piastri. Mercedes, unable to act, is reportedly furious after learning the pitlane checks were inaccurate.
