Oliver Bearman emerged largely unscathed from a dramatic crash at the Japanese Grand Prix, despite sustaining a 50G impact after swerving to avoid Franco Colapinto’s slowing Alpine at Spoon Curve. Approaching at far greater speed, the Haas driver darted left to evade the Argentine but lost control and slammed into the barriers, later limping away with a knee contusion.
The speed difference at the moment of the incident reached 50 km/h, a scenario drivers had feared under the new regulations. After the race, Bearman insisted he felt “absolutely fine,” though he apologised to his team for the heavy damage. He suggested Colapinto had not left sufficient room given the closing speed, noting that drivers and stewards had discussed such risks on Friday. Bearman stressed that the FIA had been warned about the unprecedented speed deltas created by the new rules, calling the crash an unfortunate example of those concerns becoming reality.
