Rory McIlroy disclosed the encouraging message he shared with Shane Lowry following his friend’s heartbreaking finish at the Cognizant Classic. Lowry seemed destined for victory, holding a comfortable three-stroke advantage with only three holes remaining to play. However, consecutive double bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes shattered his hopes, gifting the title to Nico Echavarria.
Devastated, Lowry admitted he "threw it away," lamenting mostly that he failed to win before his young daughter. He desperately wanted to share that special moment with her. Seeking to boost Lowry’s morale ahead of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, McIlroy drew upon his own personal experience. During a practice round, Rory reminded his countryman that he had similarly faltered at PGA National in 2014 before capturing two Major championships that same season. McIlroy emphasized that a couple of poor swings do not dictate an entire year, hoping this perspective would help Lowry recover fully.
