Portugal will return to the F1 calendar for the 2027 and 2028 seasons

The Algarve International Circuit in Portimão officially returns to Formula 1, having previously hosted two non-traditional Grands Prix during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. Lewis Hamilton dominated both events, notably surpassing Michael Schumacher’s win record there. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali expressed delight at reigniting the passion of Portuguese fans, thanking Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and local officials for their crucial support.

This short-term deal effectively replaces the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, which exits after 2026 due to the crowded 24-round calendar. While the Belgian Grand Prix has already shifted to a biennial rotational schedule starting 2028, sources indicate Portugal will not be its rotating partner.

As F1 actively explores further expansion, Germany and Turkey remain interested, while Thailand’s cabinet has approved a bid for a potential street race in Bangkok. The sport’s demand continues to soar, bringing high-energy racing back to the iconic "rollercoaster" circuit for fans.
