Nigar Sultana to step down as Bangladesh T20I captain after Asian Games

Bangladesh’s Nigar Sultana will step down as T20I captain after the Asian Games, having already informed the board of her decision in a letter sent from Japan. She intends to concentrate on her batting and wicketkeeping while continuing to lead the ODI side. Nigar has captained Bangladesh in the shortest format since 2022, guiding the team to notable highs, including their first Women’s T20 World Cup win in ten years when they defeated Scotland in 2024.

She contributed 104 runs and seven dismissals during that campaign. Her tenure, however, has faced scrutiny following mixed results: a home series loss to Sri Lanka, inconsistency in the Scotland‑Netherlands tri‑series and only two wins from five matches at the 2026 World Cup. Despite success in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where Bangladesh finished unbeaten, Nigar believes stepping aside in T20Is will help her refine her core skills while supporting the team’s broader transition.
