PGA Tour unveils major two‑tier overhaul for 2028

The PGA Tour will introduce a sweeping two‑tier structure from 2028, creating a system of promotion and relegation designed to strengthen meritocracy across the sport. The new model divides competition into the PGA Tour Championship Series and the PGA Tour Challenger Series, with the top tier featuring 23 to 24 events from February to August, each offering minimum $20 million purses and 120‑player fields. Majors, the Players Championship and team events will anchor the schedule, while additional host cities under consideration include Boston, Denver, New York and Seattle.

The Challenger Series will run concurrently, staging at least 20 events with $4 million purses and serving as the primary pathway upward. Twenty players will earn annual promotion, with two‑time winners receiving immediate elevation. A late‑season “last chance” series will offer further opportunities. CEO Brian Rolapp said the revamped structure delivers clearer pathways, higher stakes and more consistent competition among the world’s best golfers.
