Sergio Garcia apologises after breaking driver in Masters outburst

Sergio Garcia has issued a public apology after his frustration boiled over during the final round of the Masters, where he smashed and broke his driver on the second tee. Playing alongside fellow Spaniard Jon Rahm, Garcia reacted angrily when his tee shot found a fairway bunker, slamming the club into the turf twice before striking a nearby cooler and snapping the head from the shaft. In a statement posted on X, the 2017 champion said he regretted his behaviour and stressed his respect for Augusta National, the Masters and its patrons.

Because the club was damaged in anger, he was not permitted a replacement and completed the round without a driver, carding a three‑over‑par seventy‑five to finish near the bottom of the leaderboard. Garcia received a code‑of‑conduct warning from officials. Now competing on the LIV Golf circuit, he has a history of disciplinary issues, including a 2019 disqualification for misconduct.
