Mercedes set the pace as Leclerc sounds the alarm

Mercedes delivered a crushing statement in Australian Grand Prix qualifying, leaving Charles Leclerc openly pessimistic about Ferrari’s prospects. The Monegasque had hinted at concerns after Friday practice, and Saturday confirmed them: the Silver Arrows’ advantage proved far greater than winter testing in Bahrain had suggested. George Russell and rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli dominated with ease, opening gaps rarely seen in Formula 1 over the past decade.

Leclerc could do no better than fourth, finishing behind Red Bull’s impressive newcomer Isack Hadjar and trailing Russell by more than eight tenths on a lap under 80 seconds. Speaking to broadcasters, he admitted the deficit was “huge” and unlikely to be closed in the short term. Even Ferrari’s traditionally strong starts, he warned, would not be enough to challenge Mercedes on Sunday. For now, Leclerc remains resigned to damage limitation while awaiting future upgrades that might shift the balance of power.
