Mercedes is still interested in signing Max Verstappen. However, it appears that Toto Wolff's hopes of securing the four-time world champion could have to wait until the next year.

Wolff's response to Verstappen and George Russell's altercation at the Spanish Grand Prix was instructive. Some believe the Red Bull driver purposefully collided with his opponent after being told to regain the place. However, Wolff handled the situation with remarkable tact. This was a team leader attempting to keep good relations. Although Russell hasn't yet agreed to a contract extension with Mercedes, that is the general trend. There is no tiny question that Kimi Antonelli will remain in the second seat; he is a future star. An escape clause dependent on Verstappen's championship standing in the upcoming weeks and months is part of his contract. Even though he is angry about Red Bull's slide, it would be wise to hold out and observe how the regulations change this winter.
