Although no formal statement has been made, it is believed that the Australian will lose motivation before the season arrives in Imola the following weekend. Since it was revealed late last year that Alpine had expressed interest in Franco Colapinto, Doohan has been in the news.
That sparked worries that the Argentinian might replace the Australian in the drive that he was selected for last August. During the off-season, Colapinto switched from Williams to Alpine, joining the Enstone organisation as a backup driver. This action was taken in response to rumours that Doohan was on borrowed time and that the 22-year-old had a deadline in Miami to prove his abilities. He also had a heavy crash in Japan in the opening moments of Free Practice 2, leaving a hefty damage bill, a result of driver error. Ahead of the Miami Grand Prix weekend, one of Colapinto’s sponsors appeared to let slip that he would be in the car for Imola.
