Marquez’s historic 102‑point comeback rewrites MotoGP history

Marc Marquez has already carved another historic chapter into MotoGP lore, completing a comeback never before seen in the championship. After the Mugello round, the Ducati rider trailed the points leader by 102, having just returned from injuries sustained at Le Mans that required surgery on his shoulder and right foot. Seven races later, fittingly after Misano, Marquez surged to the top of the standings, drawing level with Jorge Martin at 274 points but leading on wins.

Marco Bezzecchi, who left Mugello as championship leader, has since fallen to 33 points behind. Only a few past seasons offer comparable turnarounds: Francesco Bagnaia’s 92‑point recovery in 2022 and Valentino Rossi’s dramatic but ultimately unsuccessful charge in 2006. In the Sprint era, no rider has matched Marquez’s scale of recovery. Despite racing at a disadvantage early in the season, the Cervera phenomenon has once again asserted his supremacy, proving he remains the strongest rider on the grid.
