Ter Stegen heads to Ajax

Marc‑André ter Stegen is leaving Barcelona and Spain after the club agreed a loan deal with Ajax, closing a long chapter marked by trophies, leadership and recent setbacks. According to SPORT, the two clubs have finalised the agreement, with Ajax covering most of his salary as part of the arrangement. The loan runs until 30 June 2027, giving the German goalkeeper a chance to revive his career in the Eredivisie.

Ter Stegen had been a pillar of Barcelona since arriving from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014, winning multiple La Liga titles and the 2015 Champions League. However, persistent physical issues, including a ruptured patellar tendon in 2024, derailed his form and continuity. After Hansi Flick demoted him to third choice, he spent early 2026 on loan at Girona. Now, Ajax offers a new opportunity for a player once considered among the world’s best, hoping to rediscover stability away from Spain.
