Switzerland boss Murat Yakin picks experience over youth in WC selection

Switzerland coach Murat Yakin has prioritised continuity for the World Cup, naming a 26‑man squad featuring 17 players who also travelled to Qatar four years ago. Three more were part of the group at Euro 2024, leaving only six debutants at a major tournament, including uncapped goalkeeper Marvin Keller and Bundesliga‑based newcomers Aurele Amenda, Cedric Itten, Luca Jaquez, Johan Manzambi and Miro Muheim. Captain Granit Xhaka, the nation’s most capped player with 144 appearances, and Ricardo Rodriguez will compete at their fourth World Cup, while five others return for a third consecutive edition.

The main surprises were the omissions of Young Boys attackers Alvyn Sanches and Joel Monteiro, both involved in March friendlies. Christian Fassnacht earned selection after topping the Swiss league scoring charts with 18 goals, while Itten was included despite Fortuna Düsseldorf’s relegation. Burnley striker Zeki Amdouni also made the squad after recovering from a long‑term knee injury. Switzerland face Jordan on May 31 before travelling to the United States for warm‑up matches.
