Takehiro Tomiyasu has been named in Japan’s World Cup squad despite nearly two years without an appearance for the national team. Coach Hajime Moriyasu included the Ajax defender in his 26‑man list announced in Tokyo, confirming medical staff had cleared him and highlighting the upcoming friendly against Iceland as a key chance to regain sharpness. Tomiyasu last featured for Japan in 2024 and withdrew from the March window, but remains trusted for his experience and versatility.
Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo also made the squad after an injury‑hit season, while 39‑year‑old Yuto Nagatomo is set for a remarkable fifth World Cup. The major omission is Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma, ruled out with a hamstring injury sustained earlier this month. Moriyasu said medical reports made his participation impossible.
Japan, who reached the round of 16 at the last two tournaments, open their Group F campaign against the Netherlands on June 14 before facing Tunisia and Sweden.
