Sri Lanka unveils major domestic cricket overhaul amid ICC pressure

Sri Lanka Cricket’s Transformation Committee has announced extensive reforms aimed at modernising the domestic game and restoring credibility after the country lost hosting rights for the 2027 Women’s Champions Trophy. The committee plans to reduce top‑tier clubs from 14 to 10 and extend first‑class matches from three to four days, arguing that a more competitive structure will better prepare players for Test cricket. It has also drafted a new SLC constitution, now with the government and expected to reach Parliament soon.

The ICC acknowledged progress but maintained Sri Lanka’s exclusion from board meetings until elections occur. Additional measures include restructuring coaching under Ashley Ross, upgrading umpiring with former ICC officials, and reorganising sports medicine led by Dr Alex Kountouris. Curators have been brought under direct SLC employment, and the women’s programme will receive expanded professional development. Cost‑cutting, redress for previously penalised stakeholders and a revamped schools system round out the committee’s agenda.
