Brunson leads Knicks but rejects ‘King of New York’ label

Jalen Brunson has become the unquestioned leader of the New York Knicks, yet he refuses to embrace the nickname “King of New York.” Speaking on the Road Trippin’ Show, he explained that calling himself that would feel arrogant, even after guiding the franchise to its first championship since 1973. Brunson credits his grounded personality to the tight circle he has kept since high school and college, along with the influence of his parents.

His stance comes after a dominant season in which he averaged 26.0 points and 6.8 assists, earned All‑NBA Second Team honors and finished fifth in the Clutch Player race. He elevated further in the playoffs, posting 28.4 points and winning Finals MVP as New York swept Philadelphia and Cleveland before beating San Antonio 4‑1. Entering 2026‑27, the Knicks return as champions with Brunson at the center, supported by Towns, Anunoby, Bridges and a reinforced rotation.
