Undav named Stuttgart captain as Hoeneß delivers high praise

Stuttgart have confirmed Deniz Undav as their new captain, with coach Sebastian Hoeneß announcing the decision on the eve of the Bundesliga opener against Bayern Munich. Undav inherits the armband from Atakan Karazor, marking a shift in the team’s hierarchy. Hoeneß explained that the striker’s leadership, influence on the pitch and connection with the club made the choice “logical”, emphasising his central role in Stuttgart’s long‑term plans.

Undav, already a key figure as top scorer and cup hero, enjoyed a perfect debut as captain with a 4‑0 DFB‑Pokal win over Rostock. Karazor, facing increased competition following Grischa Prömel’s arrival, may lose his starting spot but still received heartfelt praise from Hoeneß for his contribution and his role in lifting the German Cup.

Undav led Stuttgart again against Bayern, seeking to break a personal streak: in seven career meetings with the Bavarians, he has yet to score.
