Morkel takes charge of Joburg Super Kings

Albie Morkel has been named head coach of the Joburg Super Kings for the upcoming fifth season of SA20, succeeding Stephen Fleming, who led the franchise through its first four campaigns. The former South African all‑rounder, long associated with the Super Kings brand after his playing stint at Chennai and his coaching involvement in Joburg since SA20’s launch, now moves into the lead role. Team owner Rupa Gurunath praised Morkel’s impact behind the scenes, highlighting his strong relationships, developmental work and deep understanding of the organisation’s values. Director KS Viswanathan echoed those sentiments, noting Morkel’s familiarity with both the franchise’s culture and the South African cricket landscape.

Morkel described the appointment as a special milestone, reflecting on his journey from wearing the Super Kings jersey to guiding one of its franchises. Joburg finished fourth last season before losing the Eliminator, and Morkel is tasked with pushing the team forward.
