Ireland bring in Trott as short‑term consultant ahead of Afghanistan ODIs

Cricket Ireland announced that Jonathan Trott is going to join the men’s national team in a brief consultancy role beginning next week. Trott, who recently stepped down as Afghanistan’s head coach after their 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup campaign, will work with Ireland for 14 days as they prepare for a five‑match home ODI series against his former side.

During his tenure with Afghanistan, Trott oversaw a historic rise that included the nation’s first Men’s T20 World Cup semi‑final appearance in 2024. Ireland believe his insight will be invaluable not only for the upcoming series but also for their long‑term planning ahead of the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

High Performance Director Graeme West described the appointment as a rare chance to add “world‑class expertise” to the setup, noting Trott’s intimate knowledge of Afghanistan’s strategies. Ireland will open the ODI series in Bready on August 5.
