James Hopes has resigned as Sydney Sixers head coach less than two months after accepting the job, choosing instead to return home as head coach of the Brisbane Heat and Queensland Bulls. Appointed on May 4 to replace Greg Shipperd, Hopes had signed a two‑year deal but opted for a three‑year opportunity in Queensland, where he spent most of his playing career. Currently part of Washington Freedom’s staff in Major League Cricket, he will begin his new role next month.
Hopes admitted the decision was difficult, praising the Sixers for entrusting him with the position, but said the chance to lead Queensland cricket again was too meaningful to decline. A former captain of both Queensland and the Heat, he won multiple domestic titles before moving into coaching in 2016.
The Sixers expressed disappointment but understanding, confirming they will now restart their search for a new BBL head coach.
