BCCI signals earlier IPL 2027 window under review

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has indicated that the IPL could begin earlier from 2027, with discussions underway to shift the tournament forward to avoid India’s intense late‑summer heat and the onset of pre‑monsoon showers. Speaking to PTI, Saikia noted concerns from players and fans about harsh conditions after mid‑May, prompting the board and the IPL Governing Council to explore a window running from March 10 to May 15. He has already instructed officials to assess scheduling options for the league’s 20th edition.

The proposal faces complications, including India’s five‑Test Border‑Gavaskar series, which could run until March 3, and the 150th Anniversary Test between England and Australia from March 11 to 15. Saikia also ruled out expanding the league stage beyond the current 74 matches, citing international commitments and the need to protect bilateral calendars. With domestic cricket already stretching into March, the BCCI aims to streamline scheduling to accommodate an earlier IPL.
