Ballmer shuts door on any Kawhi Leonard trade

The future of Kawhi Leonard has resurfaced as a major storyline in Los Angeles, but Clippers owner Steve Ballmer remains firmly opposed to any trade involving his franchise cornerstone. According to reporting from ESPN’s Anthony Slater, the organisation expects fresh market speculation this summer, yet internal sources insist Ballmer’s stance is unchanged: the project continues to be built around Leonard, not reshaped without him.

Leonard enters the final season of his three‑year, $149.5 million contract, a status that naturally draws interest from teams seeking short‑term impact without long‑term financial commitment. Franchises unable to land top‑tier targets such as Giannis Antetokounmpo may view Leonard as a premium alternative, given his playoff pedigree and two‑way reliability.

Despite Leonard’s elite 2025–26 campaign, averaging 27.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists, the Clippers finished 42–40 and required the Play‑In, fuelling debate about structural changes. Ballmer, however, chooses continuity, keeping the franchise’s direction firmly tied to its leader.
