McCullum urges balance as England face off‑field turmoil

Brendon McCullum has called for England’s players to celebrate success sensibly while avoiding “excess,” as the fallout continues from an incident involving Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson at a London nightclub. Speaking ahead of the second Test against New Zealand, the head coach admitted frustration at recent off‑field issues but stressed he cannot make every decision for his squad. McCullum said players must understand the consequences of their actions, even as he defended the value of shared dressing‑room celebrations.

With Director of Cricket Rob Key considering an alcohol ban, McCullum rejected blanket rules, citing Alastair Cook’s reflections on the importance of post‑match camaraderie. He also urged patience as the investigation into Stokes unfolds, emphasising the need to support the all‑rounder, whom he speaks to daily.

McCullum described feeling “bewildered” and then “gutted” when the news broke.
