Angola announce former Libya boss Cissé as new coach

Angola have named Aliou Cissé as their new head coach, handing the Senegalese tactician a four‑year mandate to reshape the national team. The 50‑year‑old, who captained Senegal at the 2002 World Cup and later delivered the nation’s first Africa Cup of Nations title in 2021, resigned from his Libya post on Wednesday after ten matches.

At his presentation in Luanda, federation president Alves Simoes called the appointment a moment of “renewal,” stressing a commitment to competence, innovation and long‑term development. Angola reached the 2025 AFCON but exited in the group stage after finishing third behind Egypt and South Africa, narrowly missing out on a best third‑placed qualification spot.

Cissé takes charge of a side ranked 89th globally, whose best AFCON results remain quarter‑final runs in 2008 and 2010. His task now is to rebuild confidence and guide the Palancas Negras toward sustained competitiveness on the continental stage.
