Stokes urges County standouts to seize England test openings

Ben Stokes has challenged England’s Test hopefuls to use the opening phase of the County Championship as a springboard toward national selection. With a demanding home summer approaching, the captain described the domestic red‑ball competition as the clearest route into the squad, praising the depth emerging from both county cricket and the Lions programme. Stokes, currently recovering from a fractured cheekbone sustained in February, expects to return for Durham in May but insists the spotlight should remain on players pushing their cases.

He believes the first six or seven weeks of the season will be decisive, urging performers to make themselves impossible to overlook when selectors convene. Stokes last featured in January during England’s 4‑1 Ashes defeat in Australia, and the team now sit seventh in the World Test Championship standings. Their next assignment is a three‑match home series against New Zealand beginning June 4 at Lord’s.
