England boss Tuchel casts doubt on Foden's World Cup chances

Thomas Tuchel has warned that Phil Foden is not assured a place in England’s 2026 World Cup squad after another underwhelming performance for the national team. The Manchester City midfielder struggled in an improvised central role during England’s 1‑0 defeat to Japan, continuing a pattern of failing to replicate his club form on the international stage. Tuchel noted that Foden arrived in camp sharp and enthusiastic but has been unable to make a decisive impact in matches, a situation not helped by reduced minutes under Pep Guardiola in recent weeks.

Foden faces fierce competition from Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers for an attacking midfield berth, and Tuchel made clear that selection will depend on form, not reputation. Despite back‑to‑back setbacks against Uruguay and Japan, the England manager insisted the difficult March window “will not define” his team, stressing the importance of players finishing the season strongly before pre‑tournament preparations begin.
