France lose out to Senegal in battle for highly-rated young talent

Mamadou Diakhon has settled the debate over his international future after being named in both the France U21 and Senegal squads. The 20‑year‑old Club Brugge winger found himself at the centre of an unusual tug‑of‑war, with his rapid rise attracting interest from two national setups.

Diakhon ended the uncertainty swiftly, announcing on Instagram that he has chosen to represent Senegal. His decision reflects both ambition and opportunity: rather than progressing through France’s youth ranks, he opted for an immediate step into senior international football. With the 2026 World Cup approaching, the chance to play a meaningful role on the biggest stage proved decisive.

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw had already shown strong belief in the youngster by including him in his 28‑man squad, offering a clear pathway and immediate involvement. The Lions of Teranga will face Peru on March 28 in Paris before hosting Gambia in Diamniadio, where Diakhon could make his debut.
