"La Liga referees face sanctions if VAR intervenes twice in a match"

Amidst controversy across Spain, journalist Isaac Fouto revealed a strict new policy from the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) on 'Partidazo de COPE'. The leadership aims to reduce VAR reliance by sanctioning officials who require at least two video corrections during a single match. Fouto explained that while screens help correct mistakes, needing them implies an initial failure to spot the infraction live. Consequently, two such errors now lead to being benched, known as "the fridge."

He cited Diaz de Mera’s correct live red card call in the Real Madrid vs Rayo Vallecano game as the ideal regulatory standard. Conversely, five referees were recently punished for failing, including Gil Manzano following the Real Sociedad vs Barcelona match. The CTA prioritizes correct on-field decisions over reviews. However, Fouto noted that VAR must still intervene for clear simulation cases, creating a high-pressure environment for Spanish officials to perform perfectly without technological aid.
