The Open has been moved to avoid clashes with the 2028 Olympic Games

To prevent a scheduling conflict with the golf tournament at the Los Angeles Olympics, the R&A has decided to reschedule the historic 2028 Open Championship. Because Olympic medals will be contested between July 19 and 29, golf’s oldest major is shifting from its traditional slot in the third week of July to August 3-6.

Following this, the Senior Open is scheduled for August 10-13, while the Women's Open will take place from August 17-20. R&A chief executive Mark Darbon noted that clarifying these dates now assists global planning efforts significantly. He also assured fans that The Open would revert to its usual mid-July schedule in 2029. Venues for these three prestigious 2028 championships have not yet been selected and will be officially confirmed by organizers at a later date.
