Monumental revamped with LED façade and new hybrid pitch for Messi’s farewell

Buenos Aires’ iconic Monumental has undergone a major transformation ahead of Lionel Messi’s final appearance for Argentina, with River Plate introducing technological and structural upgrades to elevate the occasion. According to TYC Sports, the club installed over 1,000 metres of high‑efficiency LED strips along the Sívori stand, creating a 157‑metre luminous banner designed to retain its vivid red even in daylight. The visual overhaul is matched by a complete renewal of the playing surface, now a cutting‑edge hybrid pitch composed of 95% natural fibres and 5% synthetic reinforcement, supported by imported seeds to maximise durability and performance.

Construction proved challenging due to heavy rain, low temperatures and a packed concert schedule, forcing the club to rely on artificial lighting and targeted heating systems to accelerate grass growth. The stadium will host three matches in quick succession, culminating in Messi’s emotional farewell — a moment set to shine under Monumental’s new lights.
