Udoka signals VanVleet’s return: Houston prepare for key backcourt boost

Fred VanVleet’s year on the sidelines is finally approaching its end. After missing the entire 2025‑26 season due to an ACL tear, the Houston Rockets are preparing to welcome back their veteran point guard, and coach Ime Udoka has offered encouraging updates on his recovery. Udoka revealed that VanVleet has intensified his work in San Diego, completing back‑to‑back sessions and absorbing contact, signs that typically mark the final phase before a full return. Drawing from his own experience with two ACL injuries, Udoka noted the importance of clearing each milestone and staying patient through the process.

Houston felt VanVleet’s absence last season, lacking a dependable playmaker capable of organizing the offense. His 2024‑25 averages — 14.1 points, 5.6 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.6 steals — underline his value. VanVleet expects to play in preseason, beginning October 9 against Dallas, entering the final contract year eager to prove he remains a difference‑maker.
