Avdija’s 2028 free agency looms as Portland faces a contract puzzle

Deni Avdija may reach free agency in 2028 despite emerging as Portland’s most valuable player, creating a complicated contract scenario for the Trail Blazers. His current deal limits any early extension because NBA rules tie raises to the previous salary, and Avdija’s final year at 11.875 million prevents Portland from offering a figure matching his production. Although free agency wouldn’t automatically mean departure, the situation introduces avoidable uncertainty.

Portland could mimic Utah’s approach with Lauri Markkanen by opening cap space, renegotiating Avdija’s final season, and extending him from an increased number.
