FIFA urged to block Infantino from 2027 presidential election

Human rights organisation FairSquare has formally asked FIFA to declare Gianni Infantino ineligible for the 2027 presidential election, according to The Athletic. The group argues that Infantino is set to breach FIFA’s term‑limit regulations, which cap presidents at three mandates. A victory in 2027 would give him a fourth. Infantino maintains that his initial period in office, beginning in 2016, should not count because it was part of Joseph Blatter’s final term, meaning the 2027 vote would mark only his third official mandate.

FairSquare criticised the Governance, Audit and Compliance Committee, which advised in 2022 that Infantino’s first stint should be disregarded because it lasted three years rather than a full four‑year cycle. The group warns this interpretation could create a loophole enabling future presidents to call early elections to reset term limits and potentially remain in power indefinitely.
