Lakers promote Guthrie to strengthen Redick’s bench

The Los Angeles Lakers have expanded JJ Redick’s coaching staff by elevating Zach Guthrie from head coach of the South Bay Lakers to assistant coach and head of player development. His promotion follows a remarkable G League campaign in which he guided South Bay to a 26‑10 record, the league’s best mark, earning the top seed in the Western Conference and reaching the Conference Finals. A 12‑game winning streak and a Coach of the Month award in March underscored his impact and consistency throughout the season.

Guthrie arrives with a deep NBA résumé, having contributed to San Antonio, Orlando, Utah, Dallas and Washington before taking charge of South Bay in 2024. His blend of scouting expertise, tactical preparation and developmental focus provides Redick with a versatile, detail‑driven presence on the bench. The move reinforces the Lakers’ commitment to internal growth and technical continuity as they shape a staff capable of supporting both established veterans and emerging talent.
