Rafa Márquez takes charge of Mexico for 2030 World Cup cycle

The Mexican Football Federation has confirmed Rafa Márquez as the new head coach of the national team, marking the start of the 2030 World Cup cycle. His appointment follows the conclusion of Javier Aguirre’s tenure, which ended with a Round of 16 exit at the 2026 tournament. The FMF described the move as an “orderly transition,” aligned with a strategic plan first outlined in August 2024 to ensure continuity and long‑term development.

Widely regarded as one of Mexico’s greatest players, Márquez appeared in five World Cups and captained the side during major triumphs, including the 1999 Confederations Cup and two Gold Cups. His club career featured standout spells at Monaco and Barcelona, where he won multiple domestic and international titles.

After retiring, Márquez coached in Spain with Real Alcalá and Barca Atlètic before joining Aguirre’s staff for the recent World Cup. He now leads ‘El Tri’ into a new era.
