Lawes earns first West Indies ODI call-up for New Zealand series

Teenage left-arm wrist spinner Vitel Lawes has received his maiden senior call-up after being named in West Indies’ 15-man squad for the first three ODIs of the home series against New Zealand. The 19-year-old, who has trained with the senior group throughout the current home season, impressed at the ICC Under-19 World Cup with 10 wickets and the tournament’s highest dot-ball tally.

To support his transition, spin coach Nikita Miller will work closely with him during the Guyana leg. The squad remains largely consistent with the group that faced Sri Lanka in Jamaica, though enforced changes include Shimron Hetmyer’s absence due to his MLC commitments and Shamar Springer’s withdrawal following his mother’s passing. Keemo Paul replaces Springer.

Head coach Daren Sammy framed the New Zealand series as vital preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup, describing Lawes’ inclusion as part of a long-term strategy to expose players suited to specific conditions.
