Switzerland hold their nerve to reach quarter-finals after dramatic shoot-out

Switzerland advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals after surviving a tense penalty shoot-out against Colombia in Vancouver. For much of the night, Colombia carried the greater attacking threat, with James Rodríguez and Juan Quintero repeatedly testing the Swiss defence through dangerous deliveries. Gregor Kobel was kept alert by efforts from Gustavo Puerta and Jaminton Campaz, while the best opportunity of the match came in extra time when Jhon Lucumí headed Quintero’s corner against the bar from close range. Switzerland, organised but rarely fluent, created sporadic openings through Fabian Rieder, Granit Xhaka and Dan Ndoye, yet Camilo Vargas handled their attempts with confidence.

As fatigue set in, penalties felt inevitable. Colombia converted three kicks, but misses from Davinson Sánchez and Cucho Hernández proved decisive. Despite Manuel Akanji firing over, Cedric Itten and Ruben Vargas remained composed, with Vargas burying the winning penalty to seal Switzerland’s place in the last eight against Argentina.
