Paraguay coach salutes 'extraordinary' World Cup win over Germany

Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro described his team’s performance as “extraordinary” after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Germany secured a place in the World Cup last 16. Julio Enciso’s first‑half header put Paraguay ahead in Foxborough, but Kai Havertz equalised and Germany seemed poised to advance, especially after Jonathan Tah had a goal disallowed in extra time. Orlando Gill’s two crucial saves helped Paraguay prevail 4-3 following a tense 1-1 draw.

Alfaro said his players executed the plan perfectly, limiting Germany’s space and rhythm despite intense heat and the physical toll of constant defensive work. He noted Paraguay’s tendency to suffer, joking that the shootout “had to go to the sixth penalty.”

Enciso, who left injured, praised Paraguay’s fearless mentality ahead of a potential clash with France. Paraguay have now won only their second World Cup knockout match, and another victory would match their 2010 quarter‑final run.
