FIA confirms 60–40 power split for 2028 after WMSC approval

The FIA has officially ratified the revised power‑unit framework for 2027 and 2028, confirming the long‑discussed compromise on the balance between combustion and electric power. The World Motor Sport Council meeting in Macao approved the shift to a 58–42 split next season, before the full 60–40 distribution, 450 kW thermal and 300 kW electric, arrives in 2028. Fuel flow will increase by five percent in 2027 and by thirteen percent the following year, with the FIA allowing reduced race distances and shorter formation laps at selected Grands Prix to avoid redesigning fuel tanks.

President Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasised ongoing collaboration with teams as Formula One navigates innovation, sustainability, and future engine concepts, including potential sustainable‑fuel V8s. Additional changes include an updated Heat Hazard protocol, now triggered at forecast temperatures of thirty‑one degrees, the return of boost mode in low‑grip conditions, and an expansion of winter testing from three to four days for 2027.
