Mourinho confirms Benfica exit ahead of Real Madrid return

José Mourinho has officially confirmed his departure from Benfica, sharing a farewell message as he prepares to return to Real Madrid. He described representing the Lisbon club as “an honour and a privilege,” thanking president Rui Costa for the opportunity and praising the professionalism of the backroom staff. Mourinho also addressed his players, expressing gratitude and emphasising the “lasting bond” created during the season.

Benfica announced that Real Madrid will activate the €15 million release clause to secure his return, with Marco Silva immediately named as his successor. Mourinho joined Benfica last September to replace Bruno Lage and guided the team through an unbeaten league campaign, though they ultimately finished third and without trophies.

The move marks his second spell at the club where he began his head‑coaching career in 2000, and his second tenure at Real Madrid, where he previously won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
