Wolves become the first side from Europe’s major leagues to suffer relegation

Wolverhampton Wanderers have become the first club in Europe’s top five leagues to be mathematically relegated, ending an eight‑year Premier League spell and confirming a return to the Championship. The drop brings to a close Wolves’ longest uninterrupted top‑flight run of the modern era, a period that had echoed their historic First Division presence from 1932 to 1976. A recent uptick in form, including wins over Aston Villa and Liverpool and a draw with Arsenal, arrived far too late after a disastrous first half of the season in which Wolves failed to win a single match until January.

Vitor Pereira was dismissed despite saving the club last year, and a €140 million winter outlay could not compensate for the departures of Fabio Silva, Rayan Aït‑Nouri and Matheus Cunha. Rob Edwards, appointed in November, improved performances but not results. The dismantling of the Nuno‑era core ultimately pushed Wolves back into the second tier.
