Arnold dismisses ‘Group of Death’ talk as Iraq embrace World Cup test

Iraq coach Graham Arnold insists his team will not be intimidated at the 2026 World Cup, rejecting claims they have landed in a “Group of Death.” The Australian, appointed in May 2025 to revive Iraq’s qualifying hopes, led the nation to its first World Cup since 1986 and only the second in its history. Speaking to Sport Nation, he said Iraq will enter the tournament with enthusiasm, not fear, and described facing France, Norway and Senegal as a privilege for a squad largely unfamiliar with such opponents.

Arnold stressed that Iraq carry no pressure as underdogs and will approach every match with belief, arguing that their rivals shoulder the expectations. He praised his players for enduring Asia’s gruelling qualifiers and turning adversity into motivation.

Iraq will begin preparations with a friendly against Spain on 4 June in La Coruña, with plans for a final warm‑up match in the Usa before the tournament.
