Oscar Piastri beats Max Verstappen to win after Red Bull driver's penalty

After winning the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri took the lead in the Formula 1 world championship for the first time. Max Verstappen's dreams of winning were dashed by a five-second penalty.

Verstappen and Piastri started on the front row and went wheel-to-wheel into the first curve of the Jeddah street track. However, stewards quickly gave the Red Bull driver the expensive time penalty, determining that he had unjustly cut the chicane to get ahead of the McLaren driver who started faster. And having remained comfortably within that five-second margin behind Verstappen through the race's first stint, Piastri duly jumped ahead of his Dutch rival when the world champion served the penalty at the sole round of pit stops. Piastri held off Verstappen to win by three seconds, securing his second straight win and third in five races, taking the Drivers' Championship lead over teammate Lando Norris.
